OSOW carriers use a variety of different axle types in order to meet axle weight restrictions and to be able to traverse a variety of infrastructure. Lift axles allow the carrier to spread the load over an additional axle by lowering the lift axle to meet the maximum weights within the state. Though the majority of states allow lift axles, some states allow lift axles at only a fraction of the weight they allow a standard axle or restrict the position of the axle when permitting. The map on this page displays states that recognize lift axles, even if they are afforded a fraction of a standard axle weight.
