Each state has different forms, requirements, technology and staffing for permitting OSOW loads, which means the time needed to process permits can vary greatly by state. Additionally, states have different thresholds for loads requiring additional analysis, such as bridge or district reviews. Most states with online permitting services can issue OSOW loads almost instantaneously as long as the load is below certain size and weight requirements. Conversely, superload permits are issued after much longer processing times due to bridge analyses, route surveys, utility notifications and district reviews.
